How to use it
- Paste your asset IDs in Bulk (one per line), or generate a sequence in your spreadsheet first.
- In Label sheet, set line 1 to your company name and line 2 to e.g. "Property of IT, call x1234".
- Print on 5167 or 5160 sheets. Use durable polyester labels for equipment.
Designing an asset numbering scheme
Keep IDs short, unique and never reused: a prefix plus a padded number works best, like ACME-000123 or IT-2026-0042. Avoid letters that look like digits (O, I, l). Don't encode information that changes, such as the owner's name or location. Keep that in your asset register, linked by the ID.
Which barcode?
- Code 128 works with every scanner and fits 10–15 characters on a 1.75 in tag.
- Data Matrix fits on very small tags (like phone or tool tags), but needs a camera-based scanner or phone app.
Making tags that last
- Use weatherproof or polyester labels for anything that gets handled. Paper tags wear off in months.
- Laser printers give sharper, more durable bars than inkjet on synthetic labels.
- Put the tag in the same place on every device type, such as the underside of laptops or the back of monitors, so audits are quick.
Generating sequential numbers
In Excel or Google Sheets, type your first ID, e.g. ACME-000001, drag the fill handle down to create the sequence, then copy the column into the bulk generator.
