How to use it
- Enter text, a serial number or a URL, or GS1 data in brackets for GS1 DataMatrix.
- Set the module size: 15–20 mil for labels, 10 mil only on high-resolution printers.
- Download SVG/PDF for marking or artwork, PNG for labels.
Why choose Data Matrix
A Data Matrix packs dozens of characters into a square a few millimetres wide. Built-in error correction keeps it readable even when part of it is scratched or smudged. That's why it's used for marking electronic components and car parts, and for healthcare. US medical device UDI labels and pharmaceutical serialisation commonly use GS1 DataMatrix.
The solid "L" on two sides helps the scanner find the code; the dotted edges on the other two set the grid. Unlike 1D barcodes it can be read from any angle, but it needs a camera-based (imager) scanner. Older laser scanners can't read it.
Plain Data Matrix vs GS1 DataMatrix
If your text starts with an Application Identifier in brackets, like (01)09506000134352(17)271231(10)LOT42, we create a GS1 DataMatrix. It starts with a special FNC1 character so retail and healthcare systems understand the fields: GTIN, expiry, lot and serial. Anything else becomes a regular Data Matrix.
GS1 DataMatrix is also one of the 2D codes retailers are preparing to scan at checkout. See GS1 Sunrise 2027.
Size and printing
- The more data, the more modules. Keep content short for small labels.
- Leave a quiet zone of at least one module (we add two).
- Black on white, matte labels. Glossy finishes can glare under scanners.
